Edwards Drops Out
Democratic candidate John Edwards abandoned his presidential bid on Wednesday, while among Republicans challenger Mitt Romney vowed to keep up his struggle to overtake newly-crowned front-runner John McCain.Edwards was a good candidate who held the others' feet to the fire when it mattered. I think he'd make a good President, but I think his solely populist message didn't resonate well with most voters - it was all anger without something to feel good about accomplishing.Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was his party's vice presidential nominee four years ago, never managed to match the superior firepower of the two heavyweights in the Democratic race -- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
His decision leaves effectively narrows both the Democratic and Republican field to two realistic candidates apiece ahead of next week's "Super Tuesday" contests when 24 states hold nominating contests for one or both parties.
Edwards was to formally announce his withdrawal at 1 p.m. EST in New Orleans, a campaign official said.
It remains to be seen where to which candidates his supporters will split. I'm probably stating the obvious, but I'd think the more white-collar ones will go to Obama while the blue-collar ones will go to Clinton. However, I don't know the breakdown of his constituencies. Edwards could also endorse Obama - more likely than for him to endorse Clinton - so that could also make a big difference.
Fun times!

Obama Raking in the Endorsements
"I think he represents the kind of leader that we need for the future of the country," Sebelius told The Associated Press. "I think he brings the hope and optimism that we really need to restore our place in the world, as well as to bring this country together and really tackle the challenges that we have."
SOTU
Once again, I'm glad I didn't have any alcohol nearby, or I'd have woken up this morning with a horrible hangover not woken up.
This year's speech was better than his previous ones; Bush spoke for over 20 minutes, he didn't use any human props in the audience and he didn't garble his way around many tough words (probably because he didn't use any, but it's still a plus. They're learning. Baby steps).
That said, the content of his speech was the same sack of lies and bullshit he's been spinning every year. Taxes, healthcare, Iran, FISA - he can't tell the truth. He also had his typical petulant tone - "Congress MUST pass this bill, or I'm going to throw a temper tantrum." Never mind his threat to veto anything that came across his desk that he doesn't like.
It's more clear than ever that Bush and his cronies the Republican party are holding this country back from moving forward. We need to throw them out and remember how to move forward, together.
Can anyone tell me what happened to Mars? MARS!!!!
On the Democratic side, Sebelius made some great points in Obama's post-partisan style, but it seemed a little laundry list and was a little lacking on narrative when compared to Jim Webb's response last year. She is quite stately though.

Dodd Makes a Speech
So I am left to conclude that, to the president, this isn’t about security. It’s about power: power in itself, power for itself.
I make that point not to change the subject, but because I believe it solves a mystery. That is: Why is retroactive immunity so vital to this president? The answer, I believe, is that immunity means secrecy; and secrecy, to this administration, means power.
We need more leadership like this.
War?
Oh yeah, that war.
Five US soldiers were killed on Monday when their patrol was struck by a roadside bomb and attacked with small arms fire in the restive city of Mosul, the US military said. The Bush legacy continues.Iraqi police said fighting had broken out in the east of the city between US troops and unidentified armed men but declined to elaborate. The US military said it was awaiting more details.

Privatizing Social Security
Falling stock markets and interest rates have wiped £15bn off the value of UK company pension schemes so far this year, calling into question their investment strategies and reviving concerns about underfunding.
By the close of markets on Friday, there was an aggregate £5bn shortfall in the plans of the FTSE 350 largest companies, compared with a £10bn surplus at the end of December, according to data from PwC.
At one point the size of the hit to the schemes was £25bn. The gyrations highlight the fact that pension finances remain firmly tied to the fortunes of stock markets, in spite of companies’ efforts to diversify.
Markets can solve everything! FREEEDDOOOMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and more profits for corporate fatcats!)
It's insurance. It's a good thing.

Disappointment
The stimulus. Krugman:
If this description is correct, the stimulus bill will be a real disappointment. As I pointed out in an earlier post, economic theory — Milton Friedman’s theory! — suggests that if we want stimulus funds spent, they should go to people in temporary economic difficulty who are likely to be liquidity-constrained. But it appears that most of the measures that would do that — benefits to the unemployed, food stamps, aid to state and local governments — are being bargained away. Even the tax credit is apparently not fully refundable, so those who need it most, and are most likely to spend it, won’t get the full amount.
You can blame the Bush administration, whose hostility to helping those in need is now getting in the way of good economic policy. But I’m also disappointed with the Democratic leadership, for not standing up more forcefully.

I Think We Just Got a New Primary Target
The Democratic-led U.S. Senate will approve President George W. Bush's demand that telephone companies that participated in his warrantless domestic spying program receive retroactive immunity from lawsuits, a top lawmaker predicted on Wednesday.Completely unacceptable. I want senators who will lead the country by honest and progressive principles, not Cheney's twisted version of reality."I think we will prevail," Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman John Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat and a chief sponsor of the bill, told reporters.

Too much campaigning was interfering with scheduled naptimes.

Justice
Just us, apparently:
Jose Padilla, once accused of plotting with al-Qaida to blow up a radioactive "dirty bomb," was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years and four months on terrorism conspiracy charges that don't mention those initial allegations. Then of what the hell was convicted? Does no one realize that our government violated habeas corpus, tortured and broke a man on no grounds? What the hell is wrong with this government?!

Stimulus
We don't need the kind Bushco is selling. Krugman:
But — you knew this was coming, didn’t you? — it seems that the Bush administration wants to restrict the plan to income tax rebates. This means excluding the people most likely to be liquidity-constrained — because people having a bad year probably won’t owe income taxes that year — and shying away from any aid to direct government spending.Atrios makes an infrastructure point. Hooray, infrastructure!

Obama Wins Caucus Lawsuit
Good:
Democrats with ties to Hillary Rodham Clinton failed in court Thursday to prevent casino workers from caucusing at special precincts in Nevada.Clinton's attempt to disenfranchise voters is what firmly placed me in Obama's camp. Save those tricks for the Republicans. The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge James Mahan was presumed to be a boost for Clinton rival Barack Obama in the Democratic presidential caucuses Saturday because he has been endorsed by the union representing many of the shift workers who will be able to use the precincts on the Las Vegas strip.
Addicted to Oil
I forgot about this yesterday, but does anybody besides me remember Bush's big state of the union push a couple years back to get us off oil? How we're "addicted to oil"?
President Bush says "there's a hope" that, after his talks with Saudi King Abdullah seeking to restrain oil prices, OPEC "would be encouraged to authorize an increase in production," a White House official said.Just pointing it out is all. After meeting with King Abdullah Tuesday, Mr. Bush said the king is "worried about high oil prices and how they can negatively [affect] the economies around the world," according to White House press secretary Dana Perino.

Impeach
Wexler calls for it on the House floor.
This is grounds:
The White House has acknowledged recycling its backup computer tapes of e-mail before October 2003, raising the possibility that many electronic messages - including those pertaining to the CIA leak case - have been taped over and are gone forever.Watergate tapes jigga-wha?The disclosure came minutes before midnight Tuesday under a court-ordered deadline that forced the White House to reveal information it has previously refused to provide.

How Do They Function?
Peace, Democracy Top Bush AgendaI'll wait a moment while your head explodes.
Bush announced a $20 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, an important part of the U.S. strategy to bolster the defenses of its Arab allies. The president's talks with King Abdullah were expected to cover Mideast peace and democracy.

Chris Matthews
Maybe FOX should hire him:
"Let’s not forget, and I’ll be brutal, the reason she’s a US Senator, the reason she’s a candidate for President, the reason she may be a front runner, is that her husband messed around," Matthews pronounced Wednesday on MSNBC's Morning Joe.Digby has more.
I like my discourse with a side of key-lime crazy misogynist pie.

No Pay, No Play
We've gone from the ridiculous to the sublime:
David Kurtz sums up:Telephone companies cut off FBI wiretaps used to eavesdrop on suspected criminals because of the bureau's repeated failures to pay phone bills on time, according to a Justice Department audit released Thursday.
The faulty bookkeeping is part of what the audit, by the Justice Department's inspector general, described as the FBI's lax oversight of money used in undercover investigations. Poor supervision of the program also allowed one agent to steal $25,000, the audit said.More than half of 990 bills to pay for telecommunication surveillance in five unidentified FBI field offices were not paid on time, the report shows. In one office alone, unpaid costs for wiretaps from one phone company totaled $66,000.
And at least once, a wiretap used in a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act investigation — the highly secretive and sensitive cases that allow eavesdropping on suspected terrorists or spies — "was halted due to untimely payment."
Supporters of telecom immunity argue that the telecoms were doing their patriotic duty by caving to Administration requests for illegal wiretapping. That patriotism apparently has its limits: like when the government fails to pay the wiretapping phone bills.Where's my Rapture when I need it.

War?
Six U.S. soldiers were killed in a house rigged with explosives on Wednesday in Diyala province, where U.S. and Iraqi forces have launched a major operation against al Qaeda, the U.S. military said.Trick question: if a soldier dies and the media doesn't report it, are we winning? It was one of the highest daily death tolls for U.S. troops in Iraq for months. The military said four U.S. soldiers were also wounded in the explosion.
Earlier on Wednesday, the military reported the deaths of three other soldiers the day before in northern Salahuddin province, another target area of the new offensive against al Qaeda that was launched on Tuesday.
Primary Season
Looks like we've got a race on our hands on both sides.
As much as I nitpick the Dem candidates, I'm fine with all of them and, since Dodd has dropped out, I don't have a clear favorite in the race. Leaning towards Edwards, but not by a lot.
Go Huckabee, Go!!!

Thought on Iowa
Huck - I'd love to see Huck win the Republican primary. I think he's 1. the most representative of the Republican base and 2. easy to beat.
Obama - Am I glad to see Obama win? Yeah. I've given him a lot of flack over the past couple weeks for bashing progressives, but given his voting record I don't think there's a whole lot to be worried about. Maybe he's just talking a good post-partisan game but will continue to vote progressive. After all, isn't that what politics is all about? And all while, I and every other member of the Democratic base will continue to hold his feet to the fire whenever he slips.
Me - I suck at politics for politics sake.

Lovin the Troops
You don't negotiate with scum like that. Especially when he's doing it to cover his own ass.The Army has temporarily halted bonus payments for more than 20 enlistment, re-enlistment and service extension programs pending enactment of authorizing legislation.
President Bush, to the surprise of Congress and the Defense Department, vetoed the fiscal 2008 Defense Authorization Act on Dec. 29 after months bargaining with House and Senate leaders.
In announcing the pocket veto, White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said the president objected to a single provision of the legislation that would delay the reconstruction of Iraq, and expose the Iraqi government to unwarranted law suits in U.S. courts.
Caucus Time
Iowa Caucuses tonight.
Dodd is the only candidate I feel strongly about, but any of the top 3 are fine with me.
I'm going to call it for Obama and Romney.
Should be a fun night!
Needless to say, Villagers are idiots.

Justice Dept to Investigate Torture Tapes Destruction
Good:
The Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into the destruction of CIA interrogation videotapes and Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey appointed an outside prosecutor to oversee the case.
The Central Intelligence Agency acknowledged last month that it destroyed videos of officers using tough interrogation methods while questioning two al Qaeda suspects. The acknowledgment sparked a congressional inquiry and a preliminary investigation by Justice.
"The Department's National Security Division has recommended, and I have concluded, that there is a basis for initiating a criminal investigation of this matter, and I have taken steps to begin that investigation," Mr.Mukasey said in a statement released Wednesday.
Mr. Mukasey named John Durham, a federal prosecutor in Connecticut, to oversee the case.
Punting
President George W. Bush signed into law legislation that increases Medicare and Medicaid payments to doctors and extends a U.S. children's health program. The law funds a 0.5 percent payment increase for six months to doctors who treat patients under the government's Medicare and Medicaid plans, which provide health care to the elderly, disabled and poor. The legislation also maintains current funding for the State Children's Health Insurance Program until March 31, 2009.
I get it. As much as I hate not being able to get proper legislation passed right now, I know it's going to be impossible as long as Commander Prissypants is riding the Oval Office Pony (no, that's not Condi Rice). If this is how the Dems want to play ball, that's fine, as long as they hammer it home that Bush and the Republicans are the ones who are preventing progress. On that count, I think the Democrats need to try harder.

Et Tu, Obama?
Using right-wing talking points to attack Democrats does not a Democrat make. Kos:
Obama's recent embrace of right-wing talking points and wholesale embracing of Broderite "Unite 08" talking points suggests that he's giving up on Iowa and playing to the independent vote in New Hampshire. He has to stay close in Iowa to remain viable in New Hampshire, but I'm not sure why else he would decide to shit on Democrats at such a rapid clip these past few days.First the trial lawyer snip, now giving Al Gore and John Kerry the cold shoulder. I don't know what he's aiming for; even if his policies are comfortably progressive, if he wants to get them passed he's only digging himself into a hole by sistah souljah-ing the people who make up the Democratic party.
If Obama wins the nom and picks Bloomberg as his VP I might not vote.
